How much does cabinet refinishing cost in Canmore & Banff?

Nobody in the Bow Valley publishes cabinet refinishing prices, so homeowners are usually guessing. Here are the ranges we actually work with. Every quote is based on an on-site visit, but these numbers will tell you right away whether refinishing fits your budget.

Kitchen sizeTypical rangeWhat this usually looks like
Very small kitchenfrom $3,500Minimal door and drawer count — a galley or a compact condo kitchen
Small to mid-sized kitchen$5,000–6,000Most Canmore condos, rental units and short-term rentals
Large or prestige home$7,000–8,000, up to $10,000+Full-size kitchens in Canmore's larger homes, often with islands and pantry walls
Very large kitchen$10,000+High piece counts, extensive carpentry or repair, multiple zones

*Prices may vary depending on the level of preparation required and the number of pieces. These ranges are a general guideline for

What moves the price up or down

  • Number of pieces. Every door, drawer front, end panel and trim piece is prepared and sprayed individually. Piece count matters more than square footage.

  • Level of preparation and repair. Cabinets that are worn, chipped, water-damaged near the sink, or carrying an old failing finish need more sanding, filling and repair before any primer goes on.

  • Carpentry modifications. Removing a valance, adding trim, closing a gap, or adapting cabinets to a new layout adds carpentry time on top of the finishing work.

Two things that do not change our approach: the quality of the products and the level of preparation. A $3,500 kitchen gets the same system and the same care as a $10,000 one — it simply has fewer pieces.

Refinish or replace: a side-by-side

Refinishing is the right call when your cabinet boxes are solid and you dislike the look, the colour, or the wear — not the layout. If you want a different footprint, more storage, or the boxes themselves are failing, replacement makes more sense. For the large majority of Bow Valley kitchens we see, the boxes are perfectly sound.

RefinishingReplacing
CostFrom $3,500; most kitchens $5,000–10,000A new solid-wood kitchen easily runs $20,000–30,000; a mid-to-large kitchen $50,000–60,000. In prestige homes in Canmore and Banff, John has seen replacement quotes above $100,000.

A quick way to decide

Refinish if: the boxes and doors are solid, the layout works, and it is the colour, the wear or the dated look you want gone.
Replace if: you want a new layout or more storage, the boxes are warped, water-damaged or coming apart, or you are already opening walls for a full renovation.Refinishing also fits the way many Canmore homes are used: a rental refresh between tenants, a short-term rental that needs to photograph well, or a home you plan to keep for a decade but don't want to gut. Our FAQ covers the short version of whether refinishing beats replacing; this guide is the long one.

How does our hybrid shop and on-site process work?

John has applied lacquer and fine finishes by brush, roller and spray gun for more than 20 years, and cabinet work is where the spray gun earns its keep. Like any professional cabinet refinisher, we work in two places at once. Doors and drawer fronts are removed and brought to our spray shop, where they are laid flat, sprayed on every face and edge in a controlled, dust-free environment, and left to cure before coming back to your home. The cabinet boxes stay where they are and are masked and sprayed on-site. That is how you get a factory-like finish on the pieces you touch every day without the kitchen ever fully leaving the house.

  1. On-site estimate. We count every piece, check the condition of the boxes and doors, look at the material, and talk through colour and sheen. You receive a written estimate.

  2. Colour and finish selection. Warm whites, greens and deep neutrals are the most requested colours in the Bow Valley right now, but the choice is yours. We can match a sample or a paint chip.

  3. Protection. Counters, floors, appliances and adjoining rooms are masked and covered before any sanding starts.

  4. Removal and labelling. Every door, drawer front and hinge is removed and labelled so it goes back exactly where it came from.

  5. Preparation, adapted to the material. Cleaning, degreasing, sanding, filling and repair. This is where the durability comes from, and it is different for oak, maple, MDF, thermofoil or a previously painted surface.

  6. Primer and topcoats. We use high-performance products made specifically for kitchen cabinet refinishing — not wall paint. Doors are sprayed in the shop; boxes are sprayed on-site.

  7. Curing and reinstallation. Doors return, hardware goes back on (or new hardware goes in), and everything is adjusted.

  8. Final walkthrough. You inspect every piece with us before the invoice is settled.

On products: most of the premium lines we use are low-VOC, and Canada regulates VOC limits for architectural coatings nationally (Government of Canada, architectural coatings and VOCs). Where a specialized cabinet product is not low-VOC, we tell you which one and why — our FAQ explains our low-VOC policy in full.

Which cabinets can be refinished?

We refinish every type of kitchen cabinet. What changes is the preparation, the primer and the topcoat system — each material needs its own approach, and using the wrong one is why DIY and low-cost cabinet paint jobs peel.

  • Solid wood (oak, maple, birch, alder). The most common in Canmore's older homes. Oak has an open grain that shows through paint unless it is filled; maple and birch take a smooth finish readily.

  • MDF and veneered doors. Very common in condos and newer builds. MDF takes paint beautifully with the right primer; the edges and routed profiles need extra attention.

  • Thermofoil and laminate. Refinishable with the correct bonding primer and preparation. Peeling thermofoil is repaired or addressed before finishing.

  • Previously painted cabinets. The existing finish is assessed for adhesion, then sanded or stripped as needed before the new system goes on.

The honest answer to "can you do mine?" is yes — the on-site estimate tells us how much preparation your specific cabinets need, and that shows up in the quote, not as a surprise later.

How long will my kitchen be out of commission?

Two to five days, depending on the size of the kitchen. A small condo kitchen sits at the short end; a large home with an island, pantry wall and carpentry modifications sits at the long end. Because the boxes are sprayed in place while the doors are at the shop, the on-site portion is concentrated rather than spread out, and you know the schedule before we start.

Practical notes for the week: plan simple meals, expect the kitchen to be masked during spraying days, and keep pets and kids clear of the work area. Compared to the weeks a replacement takes — plus cabinet lead times — this is the shortest path to a new-looking kitchen.

Does a refinished cabinet hold up in the Bow Valley?

Yes, when it is done with the right system. Cabinets are the hardest-working painted surface in a house: opened dozens of times a day, wiped down, splashed near the sink, and heated near the stove. Wall paint is not built for that, which is why we only use high-performance products formulated for cabinet refinishing.

Canmore and Banff add one more factor: dry mountain air. Wood doors expand and contract with seasonal humidity swings, and a finish that cannot move with the wood will crack at the joints. Proper preparation and a cabinet-grade system are what allow the finish to flex with the door through a Bow Valley winter.

We stand behind the finish against peeling and colour fading. That sits on top of the promise that applies to every Final Coat project: a written estimate, and you settle the invoice only when you are 100% satisfied. Details are on our service guarantee page.

Caring for a refinished kitchen

  • Wipe with a soft cloth and mild soap and water; avoid abrasive pads and harsh degreasers.

  • Give the finish its full cure time before heavy use — we tell you exactly how long on the walkthrough.

  • Use the range hood; sustained steam and grease near the stove are the hardest conditions any cabinet finish faces.

Cabinets in condos, rentals and short-term rentals

A large share of the kitchens we refinish in Canmore are not owner-occupied. They are rental units between tenants, short-term rentals that need to look sharp in listing photos, and condos managed by property management companies that maintain dozens of units. Refinishing suits all three because it is fast, contained, and dramatically cheaper than a cabinet swap across a building.

  • Turnover windows. Two to five days fits between tenants or in a booking gap.

  • Consistency across units. Property managers can standardize a colour and finish, and we can schedule several units in sequence.

  • Listing photos. For short-term rentals, a bright kitchen is the single highest-impact upgrade per dollar for the photos guests book from.

  • Condo rules. Spraying is contained and masked; we work within building hours and elevator rules, and we carry the WCB coverage and insurance most buildings require.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to paint kitchen cabinets in Canmore?

Cabinet refinishing with Final Coat starts around $3,500 for a very small kitchen. Most Canmore condos and rental kitchens fall between $5,000 and $6,000, larger homes between $7,000 and $10,000, and very large kitchens above $10,000. Piece count, preparation and any carpentry drive the final number.

Is refinishing cheaper than replacing kitchen cabinets?

Yes, by a wide margin when the cabinet boxes are sound. Refinishing can save up to 80% of the cost of a full kitchen renovation — a new solid-wood kitchen in Canmore or Banff easily runs $20,000 to $30,000 and often far more — and takes days instead of weeks. Replacement makes sense only when you want a new layout or the boxes themselves are failing.

How long does cabinet refinishing take?

Two to five days depending on the size of the kitchen. Doors and drawer fronts are sprayed at our shop while the boxes are sprayed on-site, so the kitchen is never fully removed from the house.

Are the doors sprayed in your house or in a shop?

Both. Doors and drawer fronts go to our spray shop for a controlled, dust-free finish on every face and edge. The cabinet boxes stay in place and are masked and sprayed on-site.

Do painted cabinets chip or peel?

Not when they are prepared and finished properly. We use high-performance products made specifically for cabinet refinishing, adapt the preparation to the material, and stand behind the finish against peeling and colour fading.

Can you refinish oak, MDF, thermofoil or laminate cabinets?

Yes — we work on every type of kitchen cabinet. Each material gets its own preparation, primer and topcoat approach; that is what makes the finish last.

Do you refinish cabinets in condos and rental units?

Yes. Many of our cabinet projects are condos, rentals and short-term rentals in Canmore and Banff, including units managed by property management companies. The work is contained and masked, and we follow building hours and rules.

Can I change the colour of my cabinets completely?

Yes. Going from dark wood to white, or from white to a deep green or navy, is the most common request. Preparation and primer are adapted to the colour change so the old finish does not show through.

Can you refinish bathroom vanities and built-ins too?

Yes. Vanities, built-ins, pantry cabinets and other cabinetry are refinished with the same process, and are often done alongside the kitchen.
